MOHAMMAD EUNUS
One of the preeminent artists of the country, Mohammed Eunus was born in Thakurgaon in 1954. A well-known abstractionist who has breathed new life into the genre, Eunus graduated in fine art in 1978, from the then Institute of Fine Arts, which is now a full-fledged faculty of the University of Dhaka. He went on to study in Japan at Tama University where he discovered his own voice and had the chance to hone his craft exploring new techniques of painting while articulating his emotions through line, space, colour and texture. His haunting portrayal of a decaying time has earned him many accolades. Eunus' work has been exhibited widely, and he has received many awards at home and abroad, including the Grand Prize at the Kodo Art Show, Tokyo in 1989, an Honourable Mention in the 13th National Art Exhibition in 1998, and the Arab Bangladesh Bank Award in the 11th National Art Exhibition in 1994 and the Emar International Art Symposium Award, UAE in 2005. He represented Bangladesh in many international biennales and triennials, including the Venice Biennale in 2022. He had a grand solo exhibition at the Edge Gallery in 2017. His artworks are in the collection of the British Museum, Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan, and many private collections at home and abroad. A prolific painter, Eunus is a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, and an art organizer.
