ROKEYA SULTANA
A renowned painter and printmaker, Rokeya Sultana has made a name for herself for her ability to blend a transcendental sense of being with imaginings associated with her motherhood and women's position in society. Born in 1958, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Department of Printmaking, Institute of Fine Arts, now Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. Rokeya's art has absorbed a lot from nature, especially during her study at Santiniketan. She has exhibited in many prestigious venues at home and abroad. Rokeya Sultana is the recipient of numerous national and international scholarships and awards, including a Fulbright grant, which supported her nine-month artist’s residency at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Among the numerous accolades she received there are a Purchase Award from Somerstown Gallery, 4th Biennial, New York, USA in 1992, the Grand Prize at the 3rd Bharat Bhaban Print Biennale in 1995, India, the Bengal Foundation Award in the 14th National Art Exhibition in 1999, Dhaka. Rokeya Sultana serves as a Professor of the printmaking department at the University of Dhaka, guiding the next generation of artists towards creative excellence. Her works can be found in many prestigious collections around the world, including the Bangladesh National Museum, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She had her last solo exhibition at Edge Gallery in the year 2022.
