SHAMBHU ACHARYA
Shambhu Acharya, one of the last remaining traditional artists in the country, was born in 1954 in Munshiganj. His father Shudhir Chandra Acharya was a patua and his mother Kamola Bala Acharya was an alpona painter. He is the ninth generation artist of the family that has been practicing patchitra or scroll painting for more than 400 years or so. A good draughtsman, Shambhu Acharya's works draw inspiration from popular legends of Sree Krishna, Muharram, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various other folklores. Though the original cultural firmament and rural economy that once sustained patas no longer exist, Shambhu Acharya has taken up the responsibility of carrying forward this age-old art form and preserving it for future generations. His works have been exhibited at the Spitz Gallery London and are highly sought-after by art lovers worldwide. With his unparalleled talent, Shambhu has contributed immensely towards the safeguarding of the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh. He exhibited his works at Edge Gallery in the year 2021 in a duet with artist Abdus Shakoor Shah.
